Looking for a challenging, exciting Masters by Research project? Then look no further!
The HOSCAP Borneo team have an available position for a Masters by Research (Biology/ Ecology) student with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). Candidates who are interested to apply must be ready for fieldwork in challenging terrain, and willing to work in rural areas for extended periods of time. Candidates must be self-motivated, dedicated and committed to the work. Knowledge of camera traps, microscopy techniques, live-trapping and GIS is an advantage but not compulsory. Training will be provided.
The student will be involved with developing models to estimate occupancy, density, home range and dispersal patterns of small carnivores in relation to logging and logging-related pressures. The student will also be studying hair morphology of the carnivore species using microscopy techniques. All cost for equipment, overland logistics in the study site, air travel from Kuching to the study site, boat travel in the site, rations, guides and porters, will be covered by the project. This project provides a good opportunity to learn wildlife study design and analyze data using robust statistical approaches. The project will contribute vastly to the little information currently available on small carnivores in Borneo, particularly tolerance to logging activities. Candidates with degree in any science background are preferred but not compulsory. We provide equal opportunity to all.
Interested candidates can contact John Mathai by email (johnmathai11@gmail.com/ greensmoke72@yahoo.com) for further details.
Candidates are advised to submit a personal resume, academic results, a photo for application, and, a single page of ideas (to be later developed into a proper research proposal). Closing date for application is 25th December 2012.
